Top Songs of 1995: The UK's 50 Biggest Singles (Free on Spotify)

These are the UK's 50 biggest singles of 1995, in year end chart order. The year is remembered for Britpop, yet the best seller was a pair of soldiers from a TV drama: Robson and Jerome's Unchained Melody.

August brought the battle of Britpop, when Blur's Country House beat Oasis's Roll with It to number one. Oasis got the last laugh with Wonderwall, which stalled at number two but became the bigger song. Take That released Back for Good months before Robbie Williams left, while Coolio, Shaggy and the Outhere Brothers brought a very different energy.

Why these songs work

1995 gives a party everything: indie anthems, novelty dance tracks, ballads and hip hop. Cotton Eye Joe and Boom Boom Boom start a stampede, while Common People turns a room into a choir. The year end order mixes moods, so you'll go from Earth Song to Boombastic in a few tracks. On a silent disco that's fine, because guests can hop channels whenever a ballad comes on.
