This is the UK's top 50 best selling singles of 1999, in the order published by the Official Charts Company. Britney Spears tops it with ...Baby One More Time, which sold about 1.45 million copies here.
It was the year Europop took over Britain. Eiffel 65, ATB, Alice Deejay and the Vengaboys all sit in the top 50, alongside the first wave of UK garage from Shanks and Bigfoot and the Artful Dodger. Cliff Richard's Millennium Prayer reached number three on the list as the country counted down to 2000.

Why these songs work
Few years were as dance floor friendly as 1999. Over half this list was built for clubs or school discos, from Better Off Alone to We're Going to Ibiza! We left the chart order exactly as published. That keeps Baz Luhrmann's spoken word Sunscreen in, which makes a great breather between bangers.
